Maker Therapy

Find a therapist you can actually read up on first

Every therapist on BetterHelp's roster, with a profile that sets out what they work with, explains the methods they use in plain English, and gives you questions worth asking before you commit to a first session.

Narrow it down

No account, no questionnaire, no email address. Every filter on this site is an ordinary link, so all of it works with JavaScript switched off.

02 · What you get

What you get here that a listing page does not give you

Maker Therapy is a directory, not a clinic. What it can do is make one listing legible before you spend a session finding out.

  • Their own words, unedited

The therapist's biography exactly as they wrote it on their listing - not summarised, not tightened, not rewritten in a house voice.

  • Their methods, in plain English

CBT, EMDR, person-centred, ACT. Each one explained as what the method IS, so a list of acronyms means something before you have spoken to anybody.

  • Questions worth asking them

Built from what that therapist actually lists, so they are specific and answerable - and clearly labelled as ours, not theirs.

None of it is a review or a rating. Every line on a profile says where it came from - the roster, a public register, or us.

04 · By licence

Therapists by state

A licence is issued by one state's board, so the state is who can see you. All 51 with somebody on the roster, in alphabetical order.

05 · By language

Therapy in your own language

Nearly everyone on the roster works in English. These are the 18 other languages somebody on it offers sessions in. People often reach different material in a first language than in a second, so it is worth asking about even where you are fluent in both.

How this works, and how it is paid for

  1. Reading the roster

Maker Therapy re-reads BetterHelp's public therapist roster once a day and keeps what it said. There are 30 readings on record. Nothing on this site is submitted by a therapist and nothing is paid for placement.

  2. Building the profile

Their own words are reproduced whole. Their licence and NPI are cross-checked against public registers. Everything Maker Therapy writes - the method descriptions, the first-session walkthrough, the questions - is labelled as ours on the page where it appears.

  3. Where the money comes from

Starting through a link here takes you to BetterHelp, who pay a commission. It does not change your price, and it does not affect who appears on this site or in what order - the roster is read the same way whether anybody clicks or not.

Maker Therapy is user-supported - when you start through our links we may earn a commission from BetterHelp at no extra cost to you.

08 · FAQ

Common questions

  • Is Maker Therapy a therapy service?

No. Maker Therapy is a directory. The therapists listed here practise through BetterHelp, and sessions, scheduling and billing all happen there. This site takes no bookings and holds no clinical records.

  • Where does the information on a profile come from?

A therapist's name, credential, state, subjects, methods and biography are read from BetterHelp's public roster. Licence numbers and NPI are cross-checked against public registers. The plain-English method descriptions, the first-session walkthrough and the suggested questions are written by Maker Therapy and are labelled as such wherever they appear.

  • Are there reviews or star ratings?

No, and that is deliberate. There is no way to verify that a review of a named clinician came from somebody who saw them, so Maker Therapy publishes none rather than publishing ones it cannot stand behind.

  • Can I see any therapist on the list?

Usually only those licensed in your own state - a licence is issued by one state's board, and you generally need to be in that state during a session. 21,893 therapists are listed here across 51 states, so the state filter is the right place to start.

  • What does it cost?

BetterHelp charges one subscription price that covers messaging and live sessions, and it is the same for every therapist on the platform - an individual therapist does not set it and cannot change it. The exact figure depends on your location and the plan you choose at sign-up.

  • How does Maker Therapy make money?

Maker Therapy is user-supported - when you start through our links we may earn a commission from BetterHelp at no extra cost to you. It does not change your price, and it does not affect who appears on this site or in what order.
